Nyanya explosion: Security agencies on red alert in FCT– Mba

 Security agencies have been placed on red alert throughout the Federal Capital Territory following the explosion that occurred in Nyanya bus stop on Monday morning.

CSP Frank Mba, Police Force spokesman, told newsmen in Abuja at the scene of the incident that the blast occurred at about 6.55 a.m.

“The FCT police are already on red alert; security in and around Abuja is being strengthened; we are paying very close attention to all vulnerable points.

“We are also paying close attention to motor parks. We advise the public to avoid unnecessary huge crowd. We are also paying close attention to government buildings.

“We want to appeal for calm, cooperation and patience,’’ he said, describing the incident as sad.

Mba confirmed that 16 high capacity buses, some cars and motorcycles were affected in the explosion.

He said investigation had begun.

“Experts from the Bomb Disposal Squad are on ground, the police are working with other security agencies.

“At this stage, we may not be able to give the casualty figure; the reasons are obvious; a lot of people are in the hospital; our detectives are visiting hospitals and taking count.

“We want to give you figures that we can back up with facts,’’ he said.

A survivor, Prince Igwe, however, said a vehicle was driven into the park and parked in front of the already loaded high capacity buses.

“The driver hurriedly parked and disappeared shortly after the explosion went off. I was inside one of the buses; I struggled to come out.

“Many people died,’’ he said.

NAN also reports that the car was burnt beyond recognition but its chassis number could still be located on the engine.

A NAN correspondent who got to the scene shortly after the blast, counted about 70 corpses at the scene.

The huge explosion left a big crater at the scene of the blast.

Those affected were passengers, mostly workers leaving the park to the city centre, petty traders and vehicles conveying passengers to other locations within and outside the FCT.

Police and other security agencies as well as para-military agencies carrying out rescue operation had hectic time controlling crowd at the scene.

The force spokesman appealed to them to leave the scene for unfettered investigation.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar; Commander, Guards Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Anthony Omozoje and top security personnel visited the scene.

SSS Arrests Rev. Fr., Kingpin For Buying & Stealing Young Kids

Officials of the State Security Service paraded a Catholic priest and 20 others for their alleged involvement in child theft in Akwa Ibom State on Tuesday. SSS Deputy Director, Fubara Duke, said Rev Okono Joseph of St Peter’s Parish of the Owerri Catholic Diocese in Imo State, was arrested for buying two boys (three and four years) at N900,000.

Fubara Duke, who spoke at DSS headquarters in Uyo, said the self-styled man of God bought the children in a secret deal from an agent sponsored by one Uche Joel Canice Onyekedru from Ogiri in Imo State.

He said the kingpin of the syndicate, Onyekedru, can't even remember the number of kids he has sold:

"He usually operates in conjunction with agents, who liaise with government officials in children homes and maternity hospitals. The investigation took our men to Abia, Imo and Ebonyi states before they arrested some of the suspects. Over 20 children were rescued.
"Though some of the suspects are still at large, efforts are being intensified to ensure that they are all arrested."
Other suspects are: Mercy Etim; Collins Edet; Caroline Nkwonna; Cecilla Ngene; Eleka Okoye; Nwaonu Okoro; Adaobi Onyeke; Elizabeth Onubogu, Umeh, Ebele Nwadika, Florence Onyodobi, Emenka Anaefuna, Nnamdi Onuchukwu, Ifeoma Gladys Nweze, Chiyneyen Roseline, Idam Vivian Ogbona and David Ogbuagu.

The Assistant Director said in the last eight months, over 60 children had been stolen from their family and sold. He advised parents to be very wary of strangers in and around their vicinity.

The Case Of Madam Dora Akunyili

AKUNYILI AND THE CONFAB: Friends, family and relatives of Dora Akunyili should pressurize her to withdraw from the National Conference and proceed to observe a well deserved rest and recuperation. Yes, her presence at the Confab will make a significant difference but we love and prefer her alive as a monumental inspiration as regards courageous leadership. Yar'Adua's case is still fresh in our memory.

I can't believe that Dora's husband, her son Edozie and the rest of her family subscribed to her joining the conference that many predict would be stormy. I don't want to believe that the family has gone broke since it's obvious that their matriarch never stole from government coffers while in office. The 12 million naira remuneration should not be an alibi to further stress this woman of impeccable character and integrity with Nigeria's hydra-headed woes.

Akunyili should have clearly avoided the murky waters of Anambra politics bearing in mind that the inherent rascality and intrigues may overwhelm thorough bred professionals. Most women in full time active politics are also known to compromise their reputation. Dora is simply not that type...

President Jonathan shares part of the blame for not physically meeting the delegates before appointing them to the Confab. It is obvious that our elders at the conference did not undergo health checkup and scrutiny to ascertain their state of physical and mental well being. The Federal government should as a matter of urgency conduct medical checkup for all delegates and send our dear former NAFDAC DG to the best hospital in the world for proper medical attention. Dora deserves this kind gesture. Who knows how much finances she has expended on this ailment that emaciated her?

I was shocked when I saw her recent photographs in the social media. She deserves comprehensive treatment abroad being that our doctors here are mostly quacks and mediocre. Other ailing delegates should return home immediately. We still need them alive to offer valuable advice at this time. The Federal government should be held responsible for any emergency at the Confab.

12 million naira is not enough to lose one's precious life. Dora the amazon of our time has nothing to prove any more. Its time to replace frail and ailing delegates at the Confab with vibrant, energetic and intellectually sound youths.

I wish this woman of excellence a speedy recovery but she must go home and attend to her health.
