Microsoft Obsolete by 2017 predicts Gartner

Gartner makes a bold prediction saying that Microsoft will be obsolete by 2017. Why? Because Google Android will have taken over the world by then. The basis for this is that mobile device shipments will be ten times higher than desktop and notebook computers. Given the current state of Microsoft not having any significant market share in tablet and smartphone markets the Gartner prediction makes sense.

On the other hand Microsoft was seen dead already many times in the past. Microsoft needs though to increase the momentum of its mobile Windows dramatically to finally compete eye to eye with Google and Apple. Microsoft took over the video game market as a total new comer. Microsoft needs to figure out how to replicate that success in the tablet and smartphone market.
