Daughters Get Daddy's Death Notice via Facebook

Zimbabwe: The eldest daughter of the late Gwanda veteran educationist, Thapelo Nkwate who is based in the United Kingdom told mourners on Sunday that they were devastated to learn of their father’s death via Facebook.

Addressing over a thousand mourners at village 27 in Bengo at the burial of his father Stuart Nkwate, Thapelo said their aunts were afraid to inform them of their father’s death until the news broke out on social networking site Facebook.

“Our aunts were afraid to tell us of his death because they knew we loved him so dearly, they tried to engage our uncle but unfortunately he was asleep at that time, one of us however saw the notice on Facebook before it got to us, that is how we came to know of his death,” said Thapelo.

“Some of our friends are now regretting the incident but there is nothing wrong with that, it shows that our father was a man of the people.”

Thapelo said they had accepted the reality of their father’s death and thanked mourners who braved the wet weather to attend the funeral in large numbers.

Three busloads and over a hundred private vehicles lined up to Bengo, 80km south of Gwanda town to bid farewell to a man whom many described as a dedicated educationist and a humble man.
